A North Pole man was arrested Wednesday night after breaking into a cabin, assaulting a woman and leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase through town.
According to a criminal complaint, a man arrived at a Lions Road cabin to retrieve 47-year-old Jason Hansen’s keys and car. About 15 minutes later, Hansen showed up at the cabin, used the keys to enter, and demanded the woman hand over her phone. She had already called 911, and when she refused to give him the phone, Hansen allegedly began throwing items around the cabin while searching for it. He reportedly yelled at the woman, threatened to kill her, punched her arm, and struck her in the head when she tried to take her dog outside.
Alaska State Troopers received a 911 call from a woman screaming around 6 p.m. Wednesday.
When Hansen heard sirens, he reportedly left the cabin.
North Pole police saw Hansen leaving the property in a grey Jeep Cherokee. The vehicle failed to stop for officers and continued north on Badger Road.
Alaska State Troopers joined the pursuit. Hansen turned onto Repp Road, where he was reportedly “driving erratically.” According to the complaint, he drove in the wrong lane, maintained speeds between 25 and 40 miles per hour, and nearly hit a school bus.
Troopers attempted to execute a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver, but Hansen swerved into the opposite lane to evade them.
Hansen then turned onto Brock Road and narrowly avoided a head-on collision with a bus. Troopers successfully executed the PIT maneuver, causing Hansen to crash into a ditch.
He attempted to flee on foot toward the treeline and was tased by troopers.
Troopers reported that Hansen smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot, watery eyes, and was slurring his speech. A search warrant was obtained to test his blood.
Hansen was already on electronic monitoring for allegedly assaulting the same woman on Sunday. He had removed his ankle monitor and was under court orders not to contact her.
Hansen now faces multiple charges, including:
• Felony first-degree burglary
• Felony failure to stop at the direction of a peace officer
• Felony third-degree escape
• Felony second-degree theft
• Misdemeanor fourth-degree assault
• Misdemeanor assault in the presence of a child
• Misdemeanor unlawful contact
• Misdemeanor violating bail conditions
District Court Judge Matthew Christian set Hansen’s bail at $100,000.
