Alaska’s largest labor union is endorsing U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola, D-Alaska, for a second term.
The Alaska American Federation of Labor (AFL-CIO) endorsed the candidate on Thursday. Peltola is seeking a second full term as the state’s sole member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
“Mary Peltola is as pro-labor as they come,” the AFL-CIO said in a news release. “She spent her first term in office fighting for Alaska’s working families. She secured critical infrastructure funding and played a crucial role in getting approval from the Biden Administration for the Willow Project. SWe are proud to endorse Mary Peltola for U.S. Congress.”
Peltola won her seat in 2022 during a special election following the death of Rep. Don Young. Later that year, she won a full term after defeating both Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate, and Nick Begich.
“I am deeply honored to have received the endorsement of the Alaska AFL-CIO,” Peltola said. “As we move forward, I am committed to pursuing the stability and progress that our state urgently requires. Alaska is a labor state and our union workers deserve a representative in Washington who supports them in their fight for better pay, better benefits, and better working conditions.”
According to its website, the AFL-CIO represents 50,000 workers across more than 50 affiliated unions in Alaska.
In November, Peltola will face off against Begich again, as well as Alaska Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom, who was recently endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
