The Alaska Mining Hall of Fame will honor Gordon and Marilyn Herreid at its 2025 induction ceremony.
The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the AMHF Museum, located at 406 Cushman St. in downtown Fairbanks, next to McCafferty’s Coffee Shop. Admission is free and the ceremony will also be available via Zoom.
Gordon Weed Herreid was a pioneering geologist and adventurer whose work and life left a lasting impact on Alaska’s mining history, a news release from the Tanana-Yukon Historical Society states.
A veteran of World War II who served in the Army’s 10th Mountain Division, Herreid became the first person to summit both Denali and Mount Logan. He later worked across Alaska and Canada as a consulting geologist and was appointed chief geologist of Red Devil Mine in 1958.
In 1961, he became Alaska’s first state geologist, shaping programs to explore and understand the state’s vast mineral resources.
His wife and partner of 51 years, Marilyn Hahn Herreid, was instrumental in supporting his endeavors. Together, the couple founded Pearl Creek Farm in Fairbanks and helped launch the Tanana Valley Farmers Market in 1978.
Admission is free to attend the ceremony. For more information or a Zoom link, contact Tom Bundtzen at 907-9388-6607 or by email at bundtzen@pacrimgeol.com.
