Local high school baseball teams have begun their seasons and are now approaching the start of conference play. Here’s a look at where each team stands as things heat up.
West Valley Wolfpack
West Valley has been the most active of the local teams, Division I and Division II included, spending much of the early season on the road with multiple tournament games played away from home.
So far, the Wolfpack have built an 0-6 record with losses to South Anchorage, Wasilla, Colony, Soldotna and Service. However, none of the losses have impacted their conference standing, as their meetings with Wasilla and Colony were scheduled as non-conference games.
The Railbelt Conference standings remain a blank slate for all four teams, but that will soon change.
Two doubleheaders in the coming days will set the stage for the Wolfpack’s first conference action. They will first travel to Colony on Friday before heading to Wasilla on Saturday.
West Valley has faced both teams once already this season, suffering a 10-0 loss to Wasilla on April 11 and a narrow 13-12 defeat to Colony on April 23.
The Wolfpack’s first home stretch is just around the corner, with their home opener scheduled against Monroe Catholic on May 6.
Lathrop Malemutes
The other local Railbelt Conference team, the Lathrop Malemutes, have also been active in recent days, compiling a 2-1 record through their first three games.
Their schedule opened with back-to-back wins over East Anchorage and Bartlett, putting up eight runs in each contest for 8-6 and 8-2 victories on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Their lone loss came later Saturday against South Anchorage in a 10-2 defeat.
After three road games to start the season, the Malemutes continue their travels with a matchup against Delta on Tuesday before conference games against Wasilla and Colony on Friday and Saturday.
This opening week marks the first conference action for both the Malemutes and the Wolfpack, as Railbelt teams begin facing each other in official conference games.
Lathrop has yet to play any of their conference rivals – Wasilla, Colony and West Valley – making this upcoming stretch their first against their foes. After their road swing, the Malemutes are set to return home for their home opener against North Pole on May 6.
North Pole Patriots
After finishing last season as the Division II state tournament runner-up, the North Pole Patriots are looking to piece together another successful campaign in 2025. Through three games this season, they remain winless as they prepare to open Mid Alaska Conference play against Hutchison in the coming days.
Like several other local teams, North Pole has started its season on the road. They opened with a 10-6 loss to Division I opponent Wasilla before facing fellow Division II schools Homer and Palmer, falling 11-3 and 7-6, respectively.
The Patriots’ first conference matchups, and first home games of the season, are set for Tuesday and Wednesday against Hutchison. North Pole topped the Mid Alaska Conference regular season and conference tournament a year ago.
Monroe Catholic Rams
Monroe Catholic also comes into the current season after a Division II state tournament appearance. The Rams have been in two high-scoring contests to start their season, seeing them hold a 1-1 record.
The season opener came on Thursday against Houston, which saw the Rams fall 12-11 before bouncing back for a 21-1 win over Grace Christian. It sees the team average 16 runs per game through their first two games played.
Monroe’s upcoming schedule includes a home game against Delta on Friday, followed by a local road stretch with matchups against North Pole on Saturday, then West Valley, North Pole again and Hutchison to round out the following week from May 6-10.
Hutchison Hawks
Hutchison, one of the three local Mid Alaska Conference teams, is also set to begin its conference schedule in the coming days.
The Hawks have yet to record a game this season, with their opener set for Wednesday against North Pole. Other upcoming matchups include a non-conference game against Division I West Valley on May 6, followed by their home opener against Monroe Catholic on May 10.
Last season, Hutchison finished at the bottom of the conference standings. This year, however, all four teams — North Pole, Monroe Catholic, Delta, and Hutchison — start on equal footing as they look to begin conference play on a strong note.
