Most of the 11 teams who competed in the first Burbot Fishing Derby in Nenana in January returned for the sequel and better fishing weather.
This latest fishing derby, the Spring Ice Fishing Derby, was a fundraiser for the Nenana Public Library. It was a fun two-day event for everyone who fished, even though only four teams caught fish. There was still plenty of socializing while fishing was going on.
Team Bailey took first place for the shortest fish caught — a Burbot — and won a $50 gift card to Monderosa Restaurant.
Team Burbot Boyz — Chris Zenger and Derrick Overby — caught the longest fish, a Burbot, and earned a $300 cash prize. This team also caught the most fish — five fish. They won a gift card from Nenana Subway and a $25 gift card from Roughwoods Cafe.
Team Burbot Babes — Ayla Knodel and Brie Stuhr — didn’t catch any fish during the actual fishing derby. But then, they stayed another night and pulled in two Burbot, which might have been the winning fish of the derby — if only they were caught a day earlier.
Fishing teams included Tanana Outlaws, Burbot Boyz, Down and Derby, Dirty Burbs, AKJCAPP, Slush Puppies, Team Bailey, Caron-Cotter, Wild Style, Team Ruben and Burbot Babes.
After the success of two fishing derbies already in 2025, organizers plan to hold these fishing derbies every year.
