To the editor: I regret the fact that I even have to write such a letter, but I will not stand silent. Your statement about autism is horribly misinformed, misguided and steeped in fear.
As a mother for two teenage daughters who are on the spectrum, and I myself being on it as well, I can confirm that you have misspoke and not done your research. Contrary to your statement that “They will never go on dates, they will never hold jobs ... ” I have gone on dates, I have gotten married, I have held and currently hold a job, I have had children and have raised them, and what’s more, I am perfectly capable of using the restroom.
My oldest, at 14, holds a job and is the youngest in our state to start a saving fund for her future. Both my oldest and youngest are in highly capable programs in their schools. They have skipped grades simply by how quickly they learn.
Tell me then, sir, how is this a menace to society? How can you sit and enjoy your day knowing you have lumped all autistic children into your uninformed bucket of knowledge?
In closing, I would encourage you learn from the autistic people around you. They have much to teach you about compassion, courage and empathy!
May the God who made these beautiful, unique and wonderful people be praised and may He judge you in a way He deems fit. They are “beautifully and wonderfully made,” Psalms 139:14.
